Australia’s oldest stage race has ONE tough new look and TWO new partnership commitments for THREE more years
The Victorian Government has committed to a new cycling deal, securing the Jayco Herald Sun Tour for the next three years, and expanding in 2018 with the inaugural Women’s Herald Sun Tour.
The move sees the iconic event working towards equality, with some of the best female riders on the planet to race over two days.
The Hon. JOHN EREN MP – Minister for Tourism and Events said:
“We’ve signed up because it’s such a great event and has been going on since 1952……next year will be the most exciting and I am very excited about it being the first time that we will have female racing involved.
“The Jayco Herald Sun Tour is an ideal chance for our regional centres, rural towns and for all corners of Victoria to demonstrate the best of everything they have to offer on the national stage.
“Sporting events like these aren’t just great spectacles, they’re a big driver of our visitor economy – and they offer up big opportunities for local businesses and local families.”
“Victoria is fast cementing itself as the nation’s capital for the first class cycling events.”
Australian sports benefactor GERRY RYAN, Chairman of Jayco Australia has also extended his major partnership with the event for another three years, taking his association with cycling well into it’s third decade.
Jayco has been naming rights sponsor since 2005.
“I’m pleased to announce that today we have signed on for another three years, and are proud to match the Herald Sun and the Government commitment… they believe in this race, and cycling in this state.
“What an exciting year it will be next year, it’s been a vision and a goal, many people have been working towards a women’s race for a long time now and it’s great to see it come to fruition.”
President of Oceania Cycling Confederation and member of the UCI Management committee TRACEY GAUDRY says…
“It’s a special moment today and its great to be celebrating alongside all of you, the progression of the Jayco Herald Sun tour to stage both a men’s race and a women’s race – its been talked about for a number of years… both events have the sanctioning of the UCI… and we anticipate it will be star-studded roster.”
And 2018 will also see one of the toughest tours, with the famous race delivering over 700 kilometres of tough terrain sure to test some of the worlds best.
Orica-Scott star ESTEBAN CHAVES, a three-time Grand Tour stage winner who has battled injuries in the last 12 months, is keen to start 2018 in style telling the Herald Sun.
“It’s important to feel excited to get back on the bike and enjoy again,”Chaves said.
“I’m in full-training now and happy to see every week the fitness and body returning step by step to what it can do. I’m excited, as always, to go back to Australia.”
