Located 200 kilometres from Melbourne, Benalla is a heritage-rich town known for its beautiful surrounds and environment.
Benalla is home to the renowned Benalla Art Gallery, the regional gallery of the north-east and its internationally recognised Australian art collection. For public art of a different kind, across the river from the Gallery is the Ceramic Mural, inspired by the surrealist works of Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi.
Benalla is also home to the Wall to Wall Street Art Festival, a community-driven festival which brings street artists from across Australia and the world to paint murals on Benalla’s buildings, sheds and laneways.
For another view of Benalla, the Victorian Gliding Club, the largest Gliding Club in Australia, is located at the Benalla Airport. The Victorian Gliding Club is hosting the 34th World Gliding Championships from 2 – 22 January 2017.
The Winton Wetlands is a 8750-hectare reserve with a myriad of bird life, including whitebellied sea eagles. With its ethereal beauty and serene aura, this public reserve draws artists, poets and photographers to enjoy birdwatching, bushwalking and canoeing, while amateur astronomers come to Green Island to gaze at the unpolluted jet-black night sky.
Step back in time with a visit to the Swanpool Cinema – a ‘bush cinema’ showing art house and classics run in the town’s 1950 Memorial Hall complete with surround sound, choc tops at interval and double features, all run by a community group passionate about cinema and its culture.
While over at BPACC, (the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre), is the Benalla Cinema showing new release movies and mainstream titles every week as well as the Benalla Theatre – a regional hub for live, professional performing art.
As inviting as it sounds, Chocolate Lane in Benalla vies for status as the narrowest shop in the nation. At just 1.75 metres wide it is a specialty tea and chocolate shop situated in an old laneway at 4-10 Bridge Street, next to the Commercial Hotel.
Stay a while. There is much to see, do and discover in beautiful Benalla
